Youth Vision 5000 is a movement organized by youth for youth between 15 and 24+ where 5000 youth get together to create their own vision of Curaçao in twenty years (20) and to systematically realize this vision, with consideration for the factors/matters that binds us to the island and how we can stimulate these factors/matters; a bottom up approach to “Nation Building”, instilling passion and responsibility (individual maturity), global mindset, and broad stakeholder’s participation.

The organizing committee’s vision for this event is:

The Youth of Curaçao is growing and wants to decide together in what country they want to live. They meet each other to express their wishes in order to construct a better tomorrow. Being themselves, through healthy dialog in a spontaneous way, they help Curaçao’s dreams become a reality. Those that already made it in this country will cooperate and facilitate for those that are yet to come to succeed as well. With Faith, Determination, and Perseverance, we will succeed in Curaçao excelling internationally.

This event’s purpose is to gather 5000 youth of Curaçao, slightly less than 27% of the youth population of Curaçao, representing the broadest membership of all youth organizations to meet using Open Space Technology with the main theme, Curaçao Vision 2028-2033. This is an extension on and a revitalization of a Visioning event that was held 10 years ago as of January 2009. The materials of the previous visioning event namely, “Vishon Kòrsou” created with some youth in the past and by different stakeholders and the follow up iteration of this vision, “Vishon pa Kòrsou,” will be the foundation and will be made available for the YV5K participants. However, because it is their future the intention is to let those present visualize and describe their future in any form they feel best to express themselves.

Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles, a Dutch Caribbean island, www.curacao.com, is undergoing constitutional restructuring. The Curaçao Leadership Forum (CLF),www.curacaoleadershipforum.an, with a similar mindset and founding philosophy as the American Leadership Forum, is a non-organization that promotes ethical leadership and seeks to connect networks together that will lead the island into the birth of a new nation through the implementation of a master plan and also ensuring that the proper leadership is in place to guide the constitutional restructuring and beyond.

Vision and Leadership development go hand in hand. Leadership is needed to drive the vision. CLF leverages Organizational Architecture, Open Space 100 (OS100) meetings, and Youth Vision 5000 (YV5K) to cement a lasting alignment with our youth and future generation of ethical leadership for our Island. All as part of creating a network of 200 ethical leaders aligned to drive this country through the next levels of maturity.

The goal is to get different youth organizations to work closely together and organize this major event and during this process get to know one another better, but also hopefully test their willingness to form an alliance to work together if needed in the future, explore how they can help to facilitate the realization of this vision, each of them whilst maintaining their own organizational and personal identity!

At a broader perspective, another goal is to create a global awareness among the youth that is present. Leading will be the mission and vision that ISC (International School Connection, www.iscweb.org) has, whereby through partnerships among schools from different countries students from different parts of the world exchange perspectives and ideas, and learn to appreciate one another.

The organizing committee at this time consists of at least 16 youth representing, namely: Leo Club Curaçao, Jaycees, Youth Network Scouting, House of Worship, Radulphus College and Maria Immaculate Lyceum (MIL) from the Roman Catholic School Board (RKCS), Peter Stuyvesant of the VPCO school board, Instituto Splikami, and the Youth Methodist Church. Representatives of other organizations: MCB, RBTT, LIONS, and other private sector professionals are also involved. We expect more youth organization to actively participate. Adult organizations are welcome to provide guidance and support.

The basic criteria for this activity:

It will be for the Youth, by the Youth. Adults (Adult only organizations) will be only allowed to coach;

  • It is explicitly the intention to let different networks combine their efforts;
  • The theme will be Youth visioning - Curaçao 2030. How they perceive their future. The Youth Visioning done in 1999 by “Vishon Kòrsou,” will be made available as a baseline.
  • The form for the visioning will be free and open, and can involve all faculties, meaning speech, music, movement (dance) and other forms of expressions (including and not limited to performing arts and artistic expressions.)
The intention is to cater to different age groups, starting at 12 years. The age groups are 12 through 15, 16 through 19, and 20 through 24. The group representing young professionals between 25 and 30+ has also shown interest in joining the effort.

The website of the Curaçao Leadership Forum, www.curacaoleadershipforum.an,, will be available as an electronic platform to connect all participants and those interested in the project (living on Curaçao or overseas), and also to provide information about the project and including some or all of the results.

The preparation sessions, we will be guided by the use of the Organizational Architecture methodology of Mr. Victor Pinedo to form an organic well connected organization that could better navigate through the challenges ahead, and the Open Space Technology principles of Mr. Harrison Owen to conduct pre-conferences and the YV5K that allows building the network support. Open Space is an exciting, modern, and internationally successful way of meeting in large groups to solve complex problems and generate innovative solutions in a relatively short time.

An important outcome that is expected is that the consequence of this gathering will carry over well into the daily lives of the participants and start shaping their future right from the YV5K meeting and on.
